Unit G Summary Questions #8: Y-intercept of a Rational Function

8. How do you find the y-intercept of a rational function? Does this need to be done in the original or simplified equation?

To find the y-intercept of a rational function we use x=0! We plug in zero into all the x's of the factored or simplified equation and solve for our y-value. For example if we had our factored equation be x+4/(x-2)(x+2) by putting zeroes in all the x-values we would be left with y=(0+4)/(0-2)(0+2). We use cross multiplication in order to get a simple equation to solve for and then we just solve for the y-value. Whatever we get as our y-value we write it as a point (0, y); "y" being the y-value after having solved.
