Unit G Summary Questions #1:Horizontal Asymptotes

1. How do we know if a graph has a horizontal asymptote? What are the three options?

We know if a graph has a horizontal asymptote is because it is represented by a dotted horizontal line or by comparing the degrees of the numerator and denominator of the function that the graph corresponds to. We have three options to determine this. One is that if we have the bigger degree on bottom or the denominator then the asymptote is y=0. If we have the same degree then the asymptote is the ratio of the coefficients. If we have a bigger degree on top then there is no horizontal asymptote. It is important to know that graphs can sometimes cross through a horizontal asymptote, but only towards the middle ans never to the far right nor left.
