Unit G Summary Questions #2: Horizontal Asymptotes Continued


2. Describe what limit notation for horizontal asymptotes actually means.

When dealing with the horizontal asymptotes, graphs can sometimes cross through a horizontal asymptote but only towards the middle of the graph and never towards the far right nor left. For this reason, the horizontal asymptote has limits. The limit notation for horizontal asymptotes is As--> + ∞, f(x)--># and As x--> -∞, f(x)--> #. This means that a horizontal asymptote is never going up or down but as it goes towards infinity it is going towards a number. Also it when it goes towards negative infinity it is going towards a number. The limit notation of a horizontal asymptote is just stating where the asymptote graph is going.
